More about the Museum Building,
Muségt. 16

An almost continuous debate concerning the developement of the museum building can be traced throughout its history. In this process a number of the country’s foremost architects took part through participation in architectual competitions and separate assignments and proposals.

In 1995 the old main building underwent considerable renovations and technical upgrading. The exterior was painted in its original colors from 1930. The staircase was returned to its original 1893 form. Elevators were installed and a total renovation of the electrical system, ventilation, and fire safety equipment was performed. Today Stavanger Museum, Muségata 16, is a well maintained and interesting example of Stavanger architecture distinguished by a hundred years’ development of style and taste. At the same time it demonstrates how the operation of a modern museum can fit into a historical frame.

The zoological exhibition and the exhibition of Stavanger’s history is located in the old main building, a building which is still as it was following the renovations in 1930. In addition, this part of the building also includes an auditorium, offices for the educational section, and workshops. The administration and the library are in the south wing of the building, where you will also find the large lecture room. This lecture room is sometimes used for temporary exhibitions. The offices for the museum staff are located in the west wing.

If you would like to know more about the museum building, read Ove Magnus Bore’s article in the Stavanger Museum Yearbook 1993: "‘The greatest, most beautiful, and most impressive building in the city’, Stavanger Museum’s main building 100 years old".
