The Museum Building, Muségt. 16
Stavanger Museum’s main building was built as a museum in 1893. The architect was Hartvig Sverdrup Eckoff. The building was designed in the contemporary, richly decorated new renaissance style. It was constructed in polished bricks with wooden beams in the story dividers, and consisted mainly of an entrance and a north wing. Above the entrance there was a great dome.

H.S. Eckoff had previously designed both the theater and the nearby gymnasium, but at that time, Stavanger Museum was considered to be the most outstanding of all new architectural works in the city. The staircase in the museum was greatly admired.

In 1930 a south wing was added at the same time as the dome was removed and the facade altered in accordance with the 1930’s classicism. Stavanger municipality’s Chief Architect, Erling Nilsen, was responsible for the renovations.

The third, and so far the last, building phase was completed in 1964. This phase included an administration wing with a library and an auditorium towards the south and an office wing towards the west. The additions were designed by the architect company Retzius and Bjoland.
