Zoology has always been an important part of the Stavanger Museum.
During the first years, special efforts were not put in to specializing, and a report from 1880 shows a list of more than 581 specimens of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. In addition there are 211 specimens of fish, approximately 500 insects, and some smaller marine animals.
During the first 30-40 years, an extensive and comprehensive exhibit was put together, giving a good impression of the local fauna. Animals and birds from more exotic parts of the world were also well represented. Seamen and other Norwegians abroad provided these samples. The museum had sent inquiries with instructions for collection and preparation techniques.
