Stavanger Museum was founded in 1877. The museum covers a wide range of fields with its collections and exhibitions within both natural and cultural history.
The museum has 27 permanent positions, where of 7 are scientific. The museum consists of four separate departments:
The Zoological Department
The Ethnological Department
Stavanger Maritime Museum
The Norwegian Canning Museum.
In addition, the museum has four common service departments:
Administration
Library
School and visitor service
Technical services.
The Ethnological Department comprises the royal manor, Ledaal, and the shipowner mansion, Breidablikk.
The Stavanger Maritime Museum has the vessels Anna af Sand and Wyvern.
The Zoological Department owns the ornithological station at Revtangen.
The Norwegian Canning Museum is located in Øvre Strandgate 88. Some of the museum’s services are located in the museum’s old main building in Muségata 16.
Stavanger Museum is organized as a foundation financed by the public through the Rogaland County Administration’s budget. The museum is headed by a director and is managed by a council. The museum has its own Members’ Association.
